For this tutorial, we’ll create a travel postcard. Learn how to make it below!
How to Design a Colorful Travel-Themed Postcard using Shutterstock Create
A good postcard is personal. It’s your way of sharing your travel experiences with your friends. Design the perfect postcard in a few simple steps, using Shutterstock Create. We’ll explore simple concepts of uploading your clip art, rearranging layers, and composing the design. Finally, we’ll discuss layer blending options.
Step 1
Open Shutterstock Create in your browser. Then, under the heading “Start with a blank canvas,” choose “Custom size.” Add “1848” for width and “1248” pixels for height. Click the red button that says “Create Design” and wait for the canvas to load.
Step 2
From the panel on the left side, click “Images.” Now you can upload all 12 clipart pieces from your folder.
Step 3
Now from the uploaded clip art, select the postcard border.
Step 4
Move the border towards the edges of the canvas. You’ll have to resize and rearrange the border by copying it twice (one for each side) and it should look something like this. Take your time here and try to get the best look possible!
Step 5
Using shapes from the panel on the left, select the square shape. Make it really thin, so that it becomes a line. We won’t be using this in our design but will keep it on the canvas to separate our clip art section from the message section.
We’ll also go ahead and select the “Travel Signs” clipart and place it on the left side of our canvas. Try to center align it.
Step 6
Select the “Palm Tree” clip art and move it to the bottom of your layers. We want to ensure it’s under the postcard border you arranged in Step 4. Next, rearrange it towards the canvas’ top-left and tilt the angle slightly to make the arrangement look organic. You can try any other variations of angles here. It’s up to you.
Step 7
In this step, we’ll select more clip art and overlap each piece against each other. For this tutorial, we used luggage, sunglasses, flip-flops, and an airplane as our main elements. You may add more if you’d like. We’ll also go ahead and add a background to the left side of the postcard. You can do this by clicking “Shapes” from the left panel and selecting a solid square. We’ll change the color to yellow (#ffcf97).
Step 8
Remove the divider line now, as we have finished the left side! We’ll add a stamp to the top right section to make it look like a legitimate postcard. For the next step, while using shapes, we’ll create three lines and align them to the bottom of the postcard.
Add a little text using the “Text” tool from the panel on the left and write “To” and “Address” as shown. You can use any font of your choice. We are using “Quicksand” in its regular weight.
Don’t forget to add your message!
Step 9
Here, we’ll add a bit of texture. You can download any paper texture from Shutterstock and place it on your design. Then from the top panel, click “Edit image.” Under the heading of “Creative Effects,” select “Fade & Blend” and change the Blend Mode to “Multiply.”
Step 10
Wasn’t that simple? Now we’ll download by clicking the Download button from the top. Choose the file format you want to download, and you’re ready to share this postcard with your family and friends!
