It wasn't easy, but the U.S. men's national teamstill found a way toget the job done against Costa Rica on Wednesday. The U.S. national team gave up a goal after just 60 seconds, but it managed to turn the result around for an important2-1 World Cup qualifying victoryin Columbus.
After Costa Rica's Keysher Fuller bounced a cross into the back of the net inside the first minute, the USArecovered to equalizeon a stunning goal by Sergino Dest. That served to easethe team's nerves and the USAproceeded todictatethe match withthe game-winner comingon a shot by Tim Weah that went off the post and the Costa Rican 'keeper before crossing the line. The Americans caught a break that the Costa Rican goalkeeper in question wasn't Keylor Navas of Paris Saint-Germain, who departed at halftime with an adductor injury, making way for backup Leonel Moreira.
Against the youngest World Cup qualifying starting lineup ever fielded by the U.S. national team, a decidedly older Costa Rican side struggled to keep up as the match wore on. That was most evident at 1-1 when Costa Rica's 36-year-old captain Bryan Ruiz intercepted a U.S. pass and was breaking in one-on-one against the goalkeeper. But 24-year-old defender Miles Robinson smoothly recovered to make up for his mistake and poked the ball away in the nick of time.
